YoungMinds – Where Young People’s Mental Health Matters
YoungMinds works with young people, parents and professionals in order to reduce the stigma and isolation experienced by young people affected by mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, eating, hyperkinetic and conduct disorders and other mental health issues. With the 2001 census suggesting that 9.6% of young people experience mental illness, and a UN survey placing young British people as the least happy of their peers in comparable western countries, there has never been a greater need for our work.
• Nearly 1 in 10 children and young people in Britain aged between 5 and 16 are suffering from behavioural, emotional or hyperactivity disorders. • 1 in 5 are experiencing less severe mental health problems that significantly affect their daily lives. • Nearly 80,000 young people suffer from serious depression. • 1 in 12 deliberately self-harm. • Over half of all adults with mental illnesses had these diagnosed in childhood, but less than half were treated appropriately at the time. We are here to support these young people, and the adults who care for them.

We aim to:
• To improve life chances for children and young people experiencing or at risk of mental health difficulties. • To promote good mental health and wellbeing of all children and young people. • To work in partnership with local authorities, health, education, social services and other voluntary organisations to raise standards and pursue innovation in children’s mental health. • To identify and campaign on children and young people’s mental health priorities.
What we do:
• Hold workshops for young people in schools and youth groups on mental health issues, and the need to stay mentally healthy. • Run a Parents Information Helpline for adults concerned about a young person. • Produce publications for young people encountering mental health difficulties. • Run a young people’s committee to advise on mental health policy. • Work with isolated or vulnerable groups such as rural and ethnic minority communities, and with fathers, on issues of young people’s mental health. • Research and campaigning on issues effecting young people’s mental health. • Hold workshops and training for professionals working with young people. • Publish a bi-monthly magazine highlighting issues and debates in the field.
